From the Civil War to modern day America, The White Lightning Trail Festival will tell the story of those rugged, self-reliant people that made this area the topic of movies and gave birth to one of America’s fastest growing sports – stock car racing. The White Lightning Trail, which begins in Knoxville, TN travels through eight other counties including Anderson, Union, Campbell, Claiborne, Grainger, Jefferson, Knox, Hamblen and Cocke. These communities share a rich heritage that will be on display in the form of demonstrations, food, antique cars, craft vendors, games, bike run and a variety of music.

The White Lightning Trail takes you on a journey of living lore. Bootleggers, moonshine and fast cars combine the breathtaking scenery that is East Tennessee. Begin your journey in the Cumberland Gap National park of (Claiborne County). Then head south to reach Tazewell/New Tazewell and on to Clinch Mountain Winery in Thorn Hill (Grainger County). Continue south, crossing Cherokee Lake, for a tour of the Rose Center and the Davy Crocket Tavern in historic Morristown (Hamblen, County). In Newport (Cocke County), you’ll see the distant blue peaks of the Smokey Mountains. From Newport, head southwest crossing beautiful Douglass Lake in (Jefferson County) then continuing on to Knoxville at volunteer Park (Knox County). From there, go north on Hwy. 33 to the Union County Museum in Maynardville (Union County). Take Hwy. 170 by Big Ridge State Park to the Museum of Appalachia in Norris near Norris Dam and Andersonville (Anderson County). Then head north to Cove Lake State Park (Campbell County) and later passing through Speedwell for a stop at the Historic Speedwell Academy and ending in Harrogate at Lincoln memorial University’s Abraham Lincoln Museum near where you began your 200 mile journey along the White Lightning Trail.
